Evidence of Dark Matter
Dark matter is one of the most tantalizing mysteries in science: a theorized substance that may account for about a quarter of our universe. As a Lourie Fellow and Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellow in the Department of Physics, graduate student Charles S. Epstein ’13 is working on the DarkLight experiment, which could provide evidence of the elusive “A” particle—the dark matter equivalent of the photon. Still in its design phase, the experiment will scatter a low-energy, high-intensity electron beam on a hydrogen target to look for a devision from Standard Model predictions.
