Ground control centers currently communicate with spacecraft through radio wave transmission. While reliable, radio lacks the necessary bandwidth to support the data rate that today’s space missions demand. Working in collaboration with NASA, the Optical Communications Technology Group has been developing a laser-based communication system that could deliver data over long distances, including from space, at five times the rate of radio.
