Science and Art in Concert
The Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Music, Evan Ziporyn creates new opportunities for science and the arts to mutually thrive at MIT. Ziporyn is the inaugural faculty director of the Center for Art, Science & Technology, a joint initiative of the Office of the Provost, the School of Architecture + Planning, and the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The composer and clarinetist is also the founder and artistic director of Gamelan Galak Tika and curator of the series MIT Sounding. For Ziporyn, support from the Sahin chair has been “hugely helpful” to his creative process. “Often artistic projects get stymied before they even begin because startup funds can be so difficult to find,” he notes. “More than anything else,” he says, “the support represents the trust and confidence the Institute has in me as an artist, which is immeasurably valuable.”
