Plan Your Year-End Gift to MITA little advance planning can help you make the charitable gift you have in mind before December 31.

Tell Us What
You Care About

Whether you are considering a charitable remainder unitrust, charitable gift annuity, qualified charitable distribution from your IRA, donor-advised fund gift, or a gift of cash or securities, the MIT Office of Gift Planning (OGP) can help you understand your options and plan ahead. The earlier you begin the conversation with OGP and your professional advisors, the more time you will have to complete the necessary steps.

September–October: Start the Conversation

Talk with OGP about your charitable goals and the type of gift you would like to make. This is an ideal time to begin planning a new charitable remainder unitrust, charitable gift annuity, or MIT donor-advised fund.

If you are considering an IRA qualified charitable distribution, we can help you determine how you would like your distribution to be used at MIT.

November: Finalize the Details

Work with OGP and your advisors to complete the agreements, investment selections, and other details needed for your planned gift.

If you plan to add assets to an existing charitable remainder unitrust, please let OGP know in advance so we can help coordinate the gift.

December: Complete Your Gift

Year-end processing times can vary, particularly for gifts involving securities, IRA custodians, or donor-advised fund sponsors. We recommend beginning these arrangements well before the dates below.

  • By December 10: Contact OGP and your broker to begin a mutual fund transfer.
  • By December 21: Contact OGP and your broker to begin a stock transfer.
  • By December 31: Complete a wire transfer or mail a check. Checks should be postmarked no later than December 31.
  • For IRA qualified charitable distributions: Contact your IRA custodian as early as possible to ask about its year-end processing deadline.
  • For donor-advised fund gifts: Ask your DAF sponsor about its recommended deadline for year-end grant distributions.

Please contact OGP as early as possible if you hope to complete a gift before the end of the year. We are happy to answer your questions and work with you and your advisors.
