MIT Quantum Systems Laboratory: Defining Quantum’s Next Era
“There isn’t a more important technological field right now than quantum. We built QMIT on a foundation of problem-driven missions, which are designed to thrive in shared intellectual spaces—and ultimately, in a shared physical space.”
The MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT) represents the next great leap in MIT’s historic leadership in quantum science and engineering. A Presidential Strategic Initiative, QMIT seeks to translate quantum breakthroughs into practical solutions that are accessible, relevant, and profoundly transformative for some of the most consequential challenges in science, technology, industry, and national security.
QMIT will build on MIT’s unmatched record in shaping the field. By bringing together experts in physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science, and engineering, the initiative will advance quantum systems that are smaller, faster, more controlled, more precise, and more powerful. These new technologies will transform how information is processed, materials are designed, and the physical world is measured and understood.
At the heart of this effort is the Quantum Systems Laboratory, a new hub and physical home in the heart of campus that will foster academic, public, and corporate engagement with state-of-the-art integrated quantum systems.

A Home for Quantum at MIT
MIT is fast-tracking the renovation of Building 39 to support the installation and operation of quantum computing systems and hardware, with completion targeted within the next two years. The building holds historical significance as the former home of Project MAC—the birthplace of classical computer networking in the 1960s and a precursor to ARPAnet.
MIT has contributed significantly to the project. We seek additional philanthropic contributions of $10M to enable us to proceed with the full renovation and realize our vision for the Quantum Systems Laboratory. Your gift will help us define quantum’s next era.
