New Faculty at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing

Sara Beery is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making in EECS. Beery received her PhD in computing and mathematical sciences in 2022 at Caltech, where she was advised by Pietro Perona. Her research focuses on building computer vision methods that enable global-scale environmental and biodiversity monitoring across data modalities, tackling real-world challenges including strong spatiotemporal correlations, imperfect data quality, fine-grained categories, and long-tailed distributions.

Yoon Kim joined the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making in EECS in 2021. He is a member of CSAIL and a researcher in the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. He works on natural language processing and machine learning, and his current interests include efficient training and deployment of large-scale models, understanding the capabilities and limitations of language models, symbolic mechanisms for controlling and augmenting neural networks, and connections between computational and human language processing. Yoon completed his PhD in computer science at Harvard University, where he was advised by Alexander Rush.

Marzyeh Ghassemi PhD ’17 joined the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making in EECS in July 2021. She is also affiliated with the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and is a member of CSAIL. Her research focuses on machine learning in health care. She is working on clinical risk prediction with semi-supervised learning; optimal treatment discovery using expert demonstrations; and noninvasive patient phenotyping for behavioral conditions. Prior to her completing her PhD in computer science at MIT, she received an MSc. degree in biomedical engineering from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar and BS degrees in computer science and electrical engineering as a Goldwater Scholar at New Mexico State University.

Ericmoore Jossou is an assistant professor in a shared position between the Departments of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). His research at MIT focuses on understanding the processing-structure-properties correlation of materials for nuclear energy applications through advanced experiments, multiscale simulations, and data science. He completed his PhD in mechanical engineering in 2019 from the University of Saskatchewan.

Sherrie Wang is an assistant professor in a shared position between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. Wang was a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, hosted by Solomon Hsiang and the Global Policy Lab. She develops machine learning for Earth observation data. Her primary application areas are improving agricultural management and forecasting climate phenomena. She obtained her PhD in computational and mathematical engineering in 2021 from Stanford University, where she was advised by David Lobell.

Connor Coley PhD ’19 is the Henri Slezynger (1957) Career Development Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering (ChemE). He was formally appointed to a shared position between the college in the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making in EECS and ChemE. Prior to his arrival, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His research interests focus on how data science and laboratory automation can be used to streamline discovery in the chemical sciences.
